E-M:/ Toronto Globe & Mail on trash exports to Michigan

Enviro-Mich message from Mike Garfield <michaelg@ecocenter.org>

There's an article in yesterday's Toronto Globe & Mail on exports of
Canadian trash to two landfills in southeast Michigan. You can see it at:

Revealing quote in the story from Matt Nealy, area president of Republic
Services, the company which owns one of the two Michigan landfills: "This
area has the combination of the right geological and the
right socio-political environment." The right "socio-political"
environment? That must be the environment where almost 90% of residents
oppose waste imports, but your state environmental agency approves unwanted
landfill capacity as favors for political campaign contributors, where
"host community agreements" turn local government officials into
cheerleaders for trash companies based in Arizona, Texas, and Europe, and
where our legislature refuses to consider reasonable and constitutional
restrictions on waste imports.
