Re: E-M:/ Georgia-Pacific to Shut Down (Michigan) Paper Mill,Fire 285 Employees

Enviro-Mich message from "David Zaber" <dzaber@chorus.net>

Midwest Environmental Advocates, an environmental law center focusing on
Minnesota, Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, has released a report, "Wisconsin's
Cost-Share Program for Farm Pollution: The Milking of the Public" that
documents interesting patterns in the distribution of state agricultural
cost-share dollars (for conservation and pollution control). Take a look at
it at: http://www.midwest-e-advocates.org/.

In Wisconsin, the largest animal feeding operations (300 Animal Units+),
which comprised ~13% of all operations, received nearly 34% of the
cost-share dollars. Six case studies help to document the problem.

One has to wonder whether Michigan has a cost-share program or something
similar to help livestock operations control pollution and manage wastes.
If so, how are such funds divided among operations of different size?

I thought this report was relavent to the list since the same type of
problem may be occuring in Michigan as are occuring here in Wisconsin.
