E-M:/ Abraham and Energy

Enviro-Mich message from "Daniel Farough" <daniel.farough@sierraclub.org>

The Sierra Club ran an extensive voter education campaign on the Abraham
record. Throughout the campaign, Abraham's energy policy focused almost
exclusively on expanding areas for oil drilling. In fact, I do not think
any of his positions on energy depart from big oil's policy wish list. He
has been a proponent of opening the Artic National Wildlife Refuge to oil
drilling. In 1999 he opposed the Clean Car Resolution. This resolution had
the relatively modest goal of resuming research on fuel effieciency
standards. His environmental record and list of campaign supporters is an
unpleasant omen of likely positions at DOE (0% lcv scorecard in 1999) and
over $625,000 from polluters in his failed effort to retain his Senate seat.
In an ironic twist, Abraham voted twice to abolish the the very agency he is
now appointed to head. He also voted to kill an amendment that would have
added $62 million to the Energy Department's solar and renewable energy
programs from being considered by the full Senate, and he voted to delay
reforming the way oil companies pay royalties for drilling public

In short the selection of Abraham is an extension of George Bush and Dick
Cheney (as one would expect). George Bush has made a lot of proclaiming
himself a uniter and a healer. This selection is not likely to unite or
heal, let alone address the nation's dependence on oil.
