Re: E-M:/ PBB and early puberty in Michigan girls

Folks,

I believe the authors of the PBB and early puberty article also mentions the possibility of other pollutants such as pesticides being associated with early puberty.  Its a good point.  After all, Michigan agriculture uses lots of pesticides that are known to or suspected of affecting the hormonal system.

A few examples:

Vinclozalin
Benomyl
Dimethoate
Carbofuran
Oxydemeton-methyl
Atrazine

You can see maps of usage of these chemicals on a county by county basis in Michigan and around the nation at this website:

http://water.wr.usgs.gov/pnsp/use92

If you have time, pick some other pesticides to view on this site and see if you notice the high levels of chemical use along Michigan's western half, particularly in the moderated growing conditions along the Lake Michigan boundary areas.

Regards,

David J. Zaber

And what about all of the other pesticides that are commonly used on our crops that are endocrine disruptors?

An article at the Solon web site discusses
publication of research showing that Michigan
girls exposed in utero to poly brominated biphenyls (PBB)
(spread around the state by a Michigan Farm Bureau subsidiary
in cattle feed) have earlier menstruation by up to a year.
