                         SIERRA CLUB JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:   Environmental Justice Media Associate

Department:  Conservation and Communications/ Washington,DC

Reports To:  Director of Media Relations (Allen Mattison: 202-675-7903;

Context:     As part of the Sierra Club's media team, the Environmental
             Justice Media Associate is responsible for developing,
             coordinating and implementing messages and strategic media
             plans for the Sierra Club's environmental justice campaigns.

Scope:       The Environmental Justice Media Associate is responsible for
             implementing and coordinating media strategy for our
             environmental justice campaigns.

Job Activities:

1.   Works with the Sierra Club's environmental justice organizers and the
     national environmental justice campaign committee and in consultation
     with the national media staff to develop messages, stories, strategies
     and plans for environmental justice campaigns. As needed, develops
     news releases, talking points, fact sheets and other communications
     materials for the Sierra Club's environmental justice campaigns.

2.   Advises and assists environmental justice organizers with strategy,
     media materials, visuals and pitching for local media events and

3.   Cultivates relationships and an interest in environmental justice
     issues with key reporters and producers at national media outlets.
     Pitches environmental justice stories to national media contacts.

4.   Provides media skills and strategy training to community groups that
     the Sierra Club is working with in our environmental justice

5.   Contributes to media staff strategy meetings, and stays current on
     substantive and political developments in major conservation campaigns
     by reading latest literature, attending meetings and maintaining
     contact with relevant sources.

6.  Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Standard Overtime:

Periodic overtime is required to meet project deadlines.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- 2 to 3 years experience in grassroots organizing, grassroots
communications work, journalism and/or media relations.

-- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or
equivalent combination of education and experience.

-- Excellent writing and verbal skills.

-- Demonstrated familiarity with conservation and environmental topics,
issues and literature and grassroots organizations.

-- Knowledge and experience of how the media works, the needs of
journalists, and how to get stories placed.

-- Ability to work well under pressure, juggle competing demands and
maintain good working relations with staff and media.  Able to work
effectively as a team player.

-- Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers.

-- Able to travel frequently.
