The Michigan Chapter of The Nature Conservancy is seeking to fill two 
positions for our soon to launch Shiawassee/Clinton/Huron River Headwaters 
Program.  Below you will find brief descriptions of each postion.  If you

Fenton, MI - Shiawassee/Clinton/Huron River Headwaters Program Manager

The Shiawassee/Clinton/Huron Headwaters Project Director directs the landscape 
scale conservation efforts in the Headwaters area. The purpose of the 
Headwaters Project is to protect, maintain and enhance the area's unique 
aquatic and terrestrial ecological features.  He/she is responsible for 
community-based conservation efforts in the area, as the Conservancy has 
determined that a local presence and community support are essential to 
achieve its conservation goals. 

Primary responsibilities are to develop and implement strategies in habitat 
conservation, compatible economic development and public policy.  Protection 
efforts to accomplish ecological goals throughout the watershed include: land 
protection, the development and maintenance of innovative partnerships between 
public and private groups/agencies, education and outreach activities and the 
facilitation of land uses which are compatible with ecological objectives.  
These strategies are designed to protect priority conservation targets (e.g. 
exemplary natural communities and globally rare species) through an analysis 
of the threats to the natural systems and identification and implementation of 
key actions that will abate these critical threats.  Strategies are developed 
in concert with the local community and designed to secure local support over 
time for conservation efforts.  The position will share an office with the 
Shiawassee River Program Manager and may be responsible for oversight of the 
Conservancy's efforts in protecting the Shiawassee River.  The position will 
supervise support staff and may supervise interns, as well as volunteers, and 
is supervised by the Director of Conservation Programs.

Owosso, MI - Shiawassee River Program Manager

The Shiawassee River Program Manager is responsible for leading, coordinating 
and implementing a comprehensive land and water conservation program for the 
area defined as the Shiawassee River Project.  The purpose of the Shiawassee 
River Project is to protect, maintain and enhance the area's unique aquatic 
and terrestrial ecological features.  The Shiawassee River Program Manager 
will coordinate, organize, revise as necessary, and implement the Shiawassee 
River Site Conservation Plan.  The plan describes a program of land 
protection, biological management, scientific research and public outreach 
activities to achieve a wide range of ecological goals.  

Protection efforts to accomplish ecological goals throughout the watershed 
include: land protection, the development and maintenance of innovative 
partnerships between public and private groups/agencies, education and 
outreach activities and the facilitation of land uses which are compatible 
with ecological objectives.  The Shiawassee River Project Manager plays a 
major role in organizing and maintaining these partnership efforts and is also 
responsible for various government relations and innovative land use planning 
initiatives affecting the watershed.  The Shiawassee River Project Manager 
works cooperatively with a variety of Conservancy state, regional and chapter 
office staff to accomplish the above objectives.  The Shiawassee River Project 
Manager may supervise interns and volunteers, and is supervised by the 
Shiawassee/Clinton/Huron Headwaters Project Manager.
