E-M:/ The Moyers/Michigan Connection: Fall 2000 "Trade Secrets" report Suppressed in Mid-Michigan

Enviro-Mich message from "joonmck" <joonmck@gateway.net>

Dear EMers,

As Pam Ortner reports in today's Enviro-Mich, Bill Moyers is being smeared
by the Chemical Industry in advance of his groundbreaking broadcast "Trade
Secrets" (tomorrow night at 9 on PBS).

The MOBBED Environmentalist and his supporters want you to know that he is
being similarly smeared by powerful local interests after his attempt to
publish "trade secrets" about Mid-Michigan polluters last Fall 2000. The ME
uncovered a slew of public documents (many FOIA'd) that described, in brutal
clarity, a host of inconvenient facts that "afflicted the powerful," as they
say. He was simply doing his job, i.e. "writing an energized description of
the local environment." But, the facts, as they presented themselves, made
the bosses uncomfortable. The report, judged as being "too long," and having
a bad "tone" was buried. The bosses, in the wake of the reseacher/writer's
resistance, have sought to "kill the messenger." The MOBBING phenomenon has
been the result. When, and if, his story ever becomes public, Michiganders
will be shocked and disturbed at the many parallels between the MOBBED
environmentalist and the facts presented in the Moyers' expose.

One difference: the MOBBED environmentalist, as an "insider," does not enjoy
the independence of the journalist and so has suffered in untold ways
(similar, in part, to Jeffrey Wigand as depicted in the Russell Crowe movie,
"The Insider"). He is currently attending to his wife who attributes some of
her illness to the harassment that her husband has suffered at the job.

The MOBBED environmentalist would like to tell his story in a speaking tour
of Michigan. Stay tuned.

In Solidarity,
