Job Announcement

ENVIRONMENTAL COORDINATOR


The Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) – a 21-year-old nonprofit coalition
of over 50 local, regional and statewide environmental and public health
organizations – is seeking to fill a full-time Environmental Coordinator
position.  This person will operate within the context of a dynamic,
multi-year collaborative project involving several environmental
organizations throughout the state.

Members of Michigan’s environmental community have been working for more
than a year to design an initiative that organizes and mobilizes the public
on behalf of environmental protection.  The goals of this environmental
organizing/communications initiative include helping to create and support
effective community leadership and enhance the capacity of groups on the
ground.  The environmental coordinator is the collaborative’s primary
internal point person for coordination among local campaigns and with other
audiences.

Responsibilities

§	Act as liaison between and among collaborative partners and project
personnel.
§	Provide support to those involved in the collaborative’s organizing and
media efforts.
§	Perform basic administrative functions on behalf of the collaborative.
§	Participate in regional team meetings and other gatherings.
§	Work to ensure that the Collaborative Steering Committee’s (CSC) policy,
issue and message, and general operating guidelines are transmitted to and
followed by all collaborative partners.
§	Work to ensure that the Project Management Committee’s (PMC) directives
are implemented and guidelines followed.
§	Assist with the provision of training and technical assistance as
appropriate.

The environmental coordinator can expect to travel two to three days each
week, mainly within the state.

Qualifications

§	Grassroots organizing and campaign experience essential.
§	Familiarity with environmental issues and/or public policy development
helpful.
§	Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
§	Excellent communications skills.
§	Computer proficiency and GIS knowledge helpful.
§	Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and balance multiple tasks.
