On Wednesday, May 2, 2001 the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
(MDEQ) will hold an informational meeting regarding the status of the Allied
Paper, Inc./Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River Superfund site.  The two-hour
meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Plainwell Comfort Inn, 622 Allegan
Street (M-89) in Plainwell, MI, 616-685-9891.  We will discuss:  (1) The
status of the MDEQ/U.S. EPA review of the draft Remedial Investigation
Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for the Phase I portion of the Kalamazoo River,
(2) Proposed sampling by U.S. EPA in the Plainwell Impoundment, (3) Status
of the 12th Street Landfill Operable Unit, and (4) Status of the Allied
Paper Operable Unit RI/FS.  There will be time for questions from the
general public.

Questions should be directed to Mr. Brian von Gunten, MDEQ, Environmental
Response Division at 517-373-6808.  Persons needing special accommodations
for effective participation in the meeting should contact Mr. von Gunten by
April 25 to request mobility, hearing, or other assistance.
