LAND PROTECTION SPECIALIST
Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991. Serving nine counties, SWMLC protects the diversity, stability and beauty of southwest Michigan by preserving natural and scenic lands. The land protection specialist explores opportunities and completes land protection projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
CIdentify and prioritize land protection projects in coordination with the Land Protection Committee.
CMeet with landowners and acquaint them with SWMLC and its mission and point out the benefits of land and conservation easement donations.
CEvaluate, negotiate and draft documents for potential gifts, conservation easements, or purchases of property in service area. Thoroughly inspect property to determine potential for acceptance by SWMLC.
CFacilitate work of Land Protection Committee and supervise land protection program interns.
CMaintain a database of all land protection projects. This includes gathering data on targeted areas and natural land of the highest regional significance.
CResearch and write grants to aid in acquisition of priority projects. Solicit financial contributions in connection with the acquisition of conservation easements, gifts, and purchases of land.
CMonitor conservation easements held by SWMLC.
CWork on special projects as needed by the Executive Director.
Candidates should have:
CBachelor’s or graduate degree in natural sciences, natural resources, environmental sciences, or environmental law and/or experience in land conservation or natural resource management.
CUnderstanding of land conservation methods and basic understanding of real estate transactions and land use planning.
CFamiliarity with ecosystems, flora, and fauna of the Great Lakes region.
CExperience with word-processing, database, and spreadsheet software.
CExceptional interpersonal, written, oral, negotiation and presentation skills.
CAttention to details and accuracy, ability to bring projects to closure.
CEnthusiasm and creativity.
CStrong problem-solving and analytical skills.
CFlexible work schedule to include frequent weekends and evenings.
CWilling to live within SWMLC service area after hire.
Hours, Compensation & Application Process
Full-time position; salary commensurate with experience; health/life benefits available.
