Public Meeting to Discuss Saginaw County Aquifer Study

A public meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on April 17, at the Jonesfield
Township Hall, 217 Eddy Street, Merrill, to discuss an ongoing groundwater
study being conducted by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation
with the Department of Environmental Quality. The goal of the study is to
evaluate the impact that large groundwater withdrawals might have on
groundwater levels in Saginaw County.

The purpose of the meeting is to present an overview of the ongoing study,
the findings of the study obtained to date, proposed products to result
from the study, and a timeline for completion. It also will provide an
opportunity for the public to ask questions, comment, and provide input on
the study.

In response to concerns regarding failing domestic wells in areas near
irrigated cropland, the DEQ entered into a cooperative agreement with the
USGS in August 2000 with the goal of developing a science-based management
tool to address competing uses of groundwater in Saginaw County.
