E-M:/ FW: FSC Lake States - Central Hardwood Standards

Enviro-Mich message from "Anne Woiwode" <anne.woiwode@sierraclub.org>

The Forest Stewardship Council and the FSC Lake States Working Group (LSWG)
is releasing draft standards for the Lake States and Central Hardwoods
region for public review and comment. The public comment period will last
60 days and close June 23rd.

The easiest way to review the draft standards is via the internet
(http://www.fscstandards.org/). Click on the Lake States Region in the
U.S. map on the top of the page. That will take you to the regional draft
and a user-friendly, on-line comment forum. You also may download the
regional draft in PDF format. Or if you prefer that we mail you a hard
copy, please contact Michelle Peach (mpeach@iatp.org). As an alternative to
the on-line comment forum, you may send written comments to:

Public comments will be reviewed by the Lake States Working Group and a
final version of standards developed will be submitted to the FSC-US Board
of Directors and then to FSC A.C. in Oaxaca for final approval.

In order to facilitate the comment consideration process, please focus your
comments to a constructive and specific dialogue. Suggested rewording is
very helpful.

The LSWG region includes forested areas in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, and parts of Kentucky and Ohio. These
standards when finalized will be the basis for certification assessments
conducted by FSC accredited certifiers in this region.

The FSC Lake States Working Group (LSWG) wrote the standards after
gathering first at Sandstone, Minnesota in November 1998. The FSC-LSWG
worked on the issue with the inclusion of landowners, forest managers,
state and county agencies, sawmills, community organizations, environmental
and conservation interests.
