JOB DESCRIPTION


Title:        Community Organizer

Classification:    Full time; salaried; exempt

Salary:      26,000 - 32,000

Answers to:    Executive Director

Position Summary: The person who fills the position of WMEAC¹s Community
Organizer will bear the primary responsibility for satisfactory completion
of WMEAC¹s objectives in the " Strengthening Communities and Making the
Environment Matter" program led by the Michigan Environmental Council (MEC)
and funded by the Beldon Fund. The Community Organizer will work with
individual citizens, community groups, governments, non-governmental
organizations, business groups, student interns, volunteers, other
professionals, and others, in order to identify and promote important local
environmental issues, create and empower environmental activism, and add to
the strength of the environmental movement in the Grand Rapids metropolitan
region.  In addition to bearing direct responsibility for the satisfactory
operation of the program and reporting on the success of the program to MEC
and others, the Community Organizer will assist the Executive Director in
acquiring necessary resources for program operation and enhancement.

This is a highly visible 3-year grant-funded position offering many
opportunities for the energetic, tenacious, mature activist to make a
difference for people and the environment in this region of the state and
beyond.   

Specific Responsibilities:

Work with the Executive Director (E.D.) to set annual goals and objectives
for the program.

Advise the E.D. on selection of target communities and target issues for us
to pursue.

Work constructively with other organizations that are part of the West
Michigan team for this project.

Interact effectively with individuals and community groups concerned about
environmental issues in targeted areas, advising them, assisting them to
obtain resources, and enabling them to be more effective in achieving their
goals.

Work cooperatively with the media, WMEAC staff, MEC staff, and the staff of
other participating organizations, in order to obtain helpful public
support, recognition, and media coverage for environmental issues, and to
put all our coordinated activities in the best possible public light.

Train and supervise WMEAC interns and program assistants as necessary to
help us meet our objectives.

Monitor WMEAC¹s Beldon project expenditures and assure that they adhere to
budgetary and management guidelines.

Report in writing to the E.D. on progress on a monthly basis, or more often
if requested.  Accumulate data necessary for evaluation of the program¹s
progress and participate on an advisory basis when requested

Draft annual program budget for review and approval of E.D.

Assist E.D. in developing financial and other resources for the support and
expansion of the program.

Assure the achievement of a high standard of quality and successful
implementation of the program within designated time constraints.

Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:      Bachelor¹s degree or equivalent experience.  Master¹s
preferred.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  At least one
year relevant work experience.  Familiarity with computers.  Ability to
relate to other professionals and work supportively with volunteers and
students to meet planned objectives in a timely manner.  Ability to work
effectively with grass roots groups to encourage activism, WMEAC membership,
grass roots lobbying, and better understanding of environmental issues and
priorities.  Ability to earn the respect and confidence of the public.  Some
travel required.
