DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON NEWBERRY FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
host an open house Monday, July 16, to provide information
and receive public comment on proposed forest management
treatments to be done in 2002 in the Newberry Forest
Management Unit, Lake Superior State Forest.
The open house will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Comfort
Inn located at the junction of M-28 and M-123 in Newberry.
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the forest. The
information gathered includes size, age and health of trees;
wildlife habitat and needs; recreational use; and social
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods.
Proposed treatments may include clearcuts, selective cuts,
opening maintenance, trail relocations and campground
proposals.
The open house is an opportunity for interested people to
review proposed treatments and provide input toward final
decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public
an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about
issues of interest.
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections
or compartments to facilitate better administration of the
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under
review this year:
* Luce County: Columbus, Pentland and McMillan townships
* Chippewa County: Hulbert and Whitefish townships
A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for August 16, beginning at 9:30
a.m. at the Comfort Inn.
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for these
meetings should contact Les Homan at 906-293-3293.
