DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON ESCANABA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
host an open house Tuesday,July 17, to provide information and
receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments
to be done in 2002 in the Escanaba Forest Management Unit.
The open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the
Menominee County Annex Building, Highway US-41, Stephenson.
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the state forest.
The information gathered includes size, age and health of
trees; wildlife habitat and needs; recreational use; and
social factors, including proximity to roads and
neighborhoods. Proposed treatments may include clearcuts,
selective cuts, opening maintenance, trail relocations and
campground proposals.
The open house is an opportunity for interested people to
review proposed treatments and provide input toward final
decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public
an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about
issues of interest.
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections
or compartments to facilitate better administration of the
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under
review this year:
* Menominee County: Holmes, Lake, Ingallston, Harris and
Cedarville townships
* Delta County: Ford River and Maple Ridge townships
A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for August 15, beginning at 9:30
a.m. at The Heirman Center of Bay College, Escanaba.
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for these
meetings should contact Dennis Nezich or Eric Thompson at
906-786-2354, or Tom Schrot at 906-753-6317.
