Groundwater Tests Near Carl's Retreading Site Under Way
DEQ, local partners working to protect public health and environment
State and local officials have conducted precautionary sampling of groundwater supply wells near the Carl's Retreading site in Blair Township, though they do not believe that the wells have been impacted by contamination from the property.
The Department of Environmental Quality, in collaboration with the Grand Traverse County Health Department and Blair Township, conducted the sampling June 17 through
June 23. Future sampling will be done quarterly.
The Carl's Retreading site is at 5175 Sawyer Woods Road, Traverse City.
"We are taking a proactive approach to ensuring that public health and the environment are protected," said DEQ Director Russell Harding. "The DEQ is committed to keeping area residents informed of the facts surrounding the investigation and cleanup of this site. We will continue to provide updates as pertinent information unfolds."
Ongoing testing near the site has shown that groundwater is flowing in a southeast direction. The flow may fluctuate seasonally and the DEQ will continue to chart any shifts in direction. The DEQ also continues its on-site work to determine the extent of the buried tires and ash, and the extent of the contamination plume, and the impact to the groundwater.
Present funding for remediating contamination at the site focuses first on high-priority items such as:
· Removing all tires from the site.
· Determining the extent of the soil and groundwater contamination, and the impact on the local water supply.
· Containing and controlling any impact.
· Testing potential treatment technologies to select the most appropriate form of treatment to remediate the contaminated areas.
The DEQ encourages anyone who has questions on specific issues to call one of the following:
· Blair Township Water System Connection: Marve Radke, Blair Township zoning administrator at (231) 276-9263.
· Water Supply Well Sampling: Tom Busse, Grand Traverse Health Department at (231) 995-6022.
· Updates on Groundwater Remediation/Investigation and Tire Removal: Phil Roycraft, DEQ Waste Management Division, at (231) 775-3960 extension 6200 or Catherine Cline at extension 6202.
