I totally agree, Cynthia. I am afraid this is turning into one of those "purist" discussions, like can I eat meat and still call myself an "environmentalist." And, please, please, don't start in on that discussion again.

response below, indeed underscore it by posing the question how, even if
one takes only the first definition of "surroundings," this critical issue
could be omitted from a consideration of "the environment." Have I missed
something?

If people don't think lead exposures from indoor paint and the related but
distinct problem of lead exposure from contaminated soils are an
environmental issue, when at least 40,000 Michigan children are affected, I
don't know what IS an environmental issue.
