DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON PIGEON RIVER COUNTRY

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will 
host an open house Monday, August 13, to provide information 
and receive public comment on proposed forest management 
treatments to be done in 2003 in the Pigeon River Country 
Forest Management Unit, Mackinaw State Forest. 
The open house will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Pigeon 
River Field Office, approximately 12 miles east of 
Vanderbilt on Sturgeon Valley Road, then one mile north on 
Twin Lakes Road. 
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the forest. The 
information gathered includes size, age and health of trees; 
wildlife habitat and needs; recreational use; and social 
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods. 
Proposed treatments may include clearcuts, selective cuts, 
opening maintenance, trail relocations and campground 
proposals. 
The open house is an opportunity for interested people to 
review proposed treatments and provide input toward final 
decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public 
an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about 
issues of interest. 
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections 
or compartments to facilitate better administration of the 
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under 
review this year: 
* Otsego County: Corwith and Charlton townships 
* Montmorency County: Montmorency Township 
* Cheboygan County: Forest and Nunda townships

A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for 
these areas is scheduled for August 30, beginning at 9 a.m. 
at the Pigeon River Forest Headquarters.
