DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON GWINN FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
host an open house Monday, August 13, to provide information
and receive public comment on proposed forest management
treatments to be done in 2002 in the Gwinn Forest Management
Unit.
The open house will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the
Marquette Township Hall, 161 County Road 492, Marquette.
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the state forest.
The information gathered includes size, age and health of
trees; wildlife habitat and needs; recreational use; and
social factors, including proximity to roads and
neighborhoods. Proposed treatments may include clearcuts,
selective cuts, opening maintenance, trail relocations and
campground proposals.
The open house is an opportunity for interested people to
review the proposed treatments and provide input toward
final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the
public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists
about issues of interest.
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections
or compartments to facilitate better administration of the
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under
review this year:
* Marquette County: Champion, Chocolay, Ely, Ewing, Forsyth,
Humboldt, Michigamme, Republic, Sands, Skandia, Tilden and
Turin townships
* Alger County: Mathias, Onota, and Rock River townships
A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for August 28, beginning at 9 a.m.
at the Garden Room Restaurant, 2050 US-41 South, Marquette.
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for these
meetings should contact Bill Brondyke at 906-346-9201.
