DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON ATLANTA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
host an open house Thursday, August 23, 2001, to provide
information and receive public comment on proposed forest
management treatments to be done in 2003 in the Atlanta
Forest Management Unit, Mackinaw State Forest.
The open house will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Atlanta
Field Office, located at 13501 M-33, Atlanta, Michigan.
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the forest. The
information gathered includes size, age and health of trees;
wildlife habitat and needs; recreational use; and social
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods.
Proposed treatments may include clearcuts, selective cuts,
opening maintenance, trail relocations and campground
proposals.
The open house is an opportunity for interested people to
review proposed treatments and provide input toward final
decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public
an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about
issues of interest.
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections
or compartments to facilitate better administration of the
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under
review this year:
* Montmorency County: Albert, Avery, Briley, Loud,
Montmorency, and Vienna townships
* Presque Isle County: Allis, North Allis, Case, Metz, and
Ocqueoc townships
* Alpena County: Alpena, Long Rapids, and Wellington
townships
* Cheboygan County: Benton Townships
A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for August 30, beginning at 8:30
a.m. at the Atlanta Field Office.
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for these
meetings should contact Mike Mang at 517-732-3541 ext. 5042,
or Dayle Garlock at 517-785-4251.
