An Ozone Action! Day Alert Has Been Declared for Tuesday, July 31...
OZONE ACTION! WEATHER SUMMARY
Monday, July 30, 2001
An Ozone Action! Day alert has been declared for Tuesday, July 31 for
Southeast AND West Michigan!!!!
During Monday, a high pressure system will set up over the Ohio valley
causing the Great Lakes region to experience light winds,
sunny skies, and temperatures approaching 90 degrees. With the light winds,
we can expect some areas to experience rising ozone
concentrations as unmixed air begins to stagnate with accumulating urban
air pollutants. As a result, we expect Monday's ozone
levels will creep into the moderate levels with possibly a few urban
stations exceeding the 85 ppb threshold.
By Tuesday, high background concentrations left over from Monday's air
stagnation will combine with urban air transport from
upwind cities as winds shift to the southwest. The combination of stagnated
air with urban air transport spells air quality trouble
when you include the sunny skies, muggy conditions, and temperatures
exceeding the 90 degree mark.
As a result, an Ozone Action! Day IS declared for both Southeast Michigan
AND West Michigan for Tuesday, July 31. Individuals
susceptible to elevated ozone levels and/or high temperatures should make
every effort to remain in an air conditioned
environment.
Conditions promise to be similar, if not worse, Wednesday. We will review
the latest model runs Tuesday morning to get a better
feel for how Wednesday's weather will unfold and update this forecast. Long
range forecasts are predicting the passage of a front
during Thursday which will provide relief for the end of the week.
