E-M:/ Michigan floats $35 Million in Tax Free bonds to Waste Management

Enviro-Mich message from "Jeff Surfus" <jeffsurfus@mediaone.net>

Yesterday, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved the issuance of $35
million worth of tax exempt bonds to Waste Management of Michigan. This
is not something you will see on the news or hear about in any way other
than right here.

According to the authorizing resolution upon which the board voted, Waste
Management will receive these bonds for the purpose of expanding landfills
in the following counties: Macomb, Leelanau, Wayne, Crawford, Clare, and

What does this mean?

Waste Management, the largest waste disposal firm in the world and one of
the largest corporations in the world, is receiving tax free money from
the Engler Administration (FYI the Michigan Strategic Fund operates as an
autonomous agency under the Department of Management and Budget.) so they
can create more landfill space, bring in more out-of-state waste, and make
more profit, all at the expense of Michigan citizens, both financially and

Waste Management's landfills in Wayne and Macomb Counties already bring in
over 1 million cubic yards of Canadian garbage per year, and it's bound to
go up thanks to this gift from the State of Michigan.

Although, to my knowledge, no permit applications have been filed for
expansion of landfills in these counties, the issuance of these bonds is
the first step in that direction.

I hope that those of you in those counties are prepared for bigger and
bigger super landfills which will be a magnet for garbage from hundreds of
miles away.
