Friends of the Rouge
Rouge Education Project (REP) Assistant Description

General Summary

Under the general direction of the Friends of the Rouge Managing Director 
and the direct supervision of the Rouge Education Project Coordinator, the 
Rouge Education Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting with 
the planning and implementation of the Rouge Education Project (REP).  The 
REP is a nationally recognized, school-based water quality-monitoring 
program in its 14th year of service in approximately 80 K-12 schools 
throughout the Rouge River watershed, located in southeastern Michigan.

Job Functions and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

1. Help to ensure that teachers receive the information, equipment and 
other resources necessary to use the REP curriculum in their classrooms
2. Communicate with participating teachers, school administrators and 
volunteers via phone, mail, fax and e-mail
3. Assist with preparations for and attend REP workshops
4. Enter project data and assist with record keeping
5. Track and place orders for water quality monitoring equipment
6. Assist in efforts to recruit new schools, corporate sponsors and 
volunteers to the REP, including some public speaking and staffing displays 
at conferences and festivals

Secondary Job Functions

1. Assist and support the Friends of the Rouge (FOTR) team and volunteers 
in FOTR activities and programs
2. Track and report activities and time on a daily/weekly/monthly basis


* College coursework in education or science-related field of study (degree 
not required)
* Some knowledge of environmental issues

Skills, Abilities

1. Self-starter, detail-oriented, enthusiastic
2. Capable of cheerfully meeting challenges and deadlines
3. Demonstrated organizational skills
4. Strong verbal and written communication skills
5. Possess a strong interest in the environment
6. Experience with PC, MS Office and the Internet
7. Ability to work in a team environment


Physical Demands

* Must have the ability to occasionally lift 10-40 pounds
* Must be able to walk, bend, squat, reach, sit and other such activities
* Must be able to occasionally work outside in fall, winter and spring


Must have reliable transportation

Work Hours

This is a part-time, temporary position averaging 25 hours per week from 
September 1, 2001 through June 28, 2002.  The wage is $10 per hour, and no 
benefits are provided.  Hours are somewhat flexible, with most hours worked 
between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  However, the 
position requires work on some evenings and weekends.
