E-M:/ More MDEQ closed-door meetings with polluters

Enviro-Mich message from James Clift <jamesmec@voyager.net>

Tomorrow top MDEQ officials are scheduled to meet in private with
industry representatives regarding a rule package pending before the
department on the cleanup of contaminated property in Michigan. The
rules cover when cleanups have to be done, how much toxic material can
be left in the ground and groundwater, and when the department has to be
informed of cleanup efforts. The meeting comes before a "public hearing"
scheduled for August 28, 2001 (apparently somebody is more comfortable
meeting behind closed doors).

The stated purpose of the meeting is to" identify major issues or
concerns with the proposed rules and assist in drafting rule revisions
to address those concerns."

Despite Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) long-time participation on
the Part 201 Advisory Council, its requests to attend the rules work
group meeting were denied.

The Part 201 Rules Work Group members are:
Russell Harding, Director- MDEQ
Art Nash, Deputy Director - MDEQ
Al Howard, Chief, Environmental Response Division
and representatives from General Motors Corporation, Consumers Energy,
Dow Chemical Company, Alticor, Michigan Manufacturers Association,
Michigan Chemical Council and Warner, Norcross and Judd (a law firm that
represents industry and municipalities on cleanup issues).

For other members of the "general public' a hearing is scheduled for
next Tuesday (9/28) from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at
the Forum Auditorium, Michigan Library and Historical Center, 717
Allegan, Lansing, MI. Copies of the proposed rules (341 pages) are
available on the MDEQ website at: www.deq.state.mi.us/erd
