E-M:/ MDEQ closed-door meetings with polluters

Enviro-Mich message from HAMILTREEF@aol.com

Closed door meetings with the polluters and developers is the common practice
with the Republican Engler control of the DEQ.

Another example is the Genesco's Whitehall Leather Company on White Lake in
Muskegon County. Genesco Company is in Tennessee and has closed the
Whitehall Leather tannery as a sellout. The tannery has 83,000+ cu yds of
contaminated sediment in the lake to clean out, but the company and
developers only want to take out about 11,000 cu yds which is just enough to
fill in the wetlands for a 65 unit condo development and leave the lake
forever contaminated with over 72,000 cu yds. The no brainer simple cleanup
order permit for the whole 83,000 cu yds was to be ordered last June, but the
governor's office pulled the decision out of the DEQ's hands while they cut
their deals under the table behind closed doors. White Lake is still waiting
for the cleanup order. The tannery Republican odors smell all the way to and
from Lansing.

The White Lake's Ellenwood Landing Marina construction and later expasion in
Montague are two other examples of Republican influence for unscrupulous
