E-M:/ Support a 3 ppb arsenic standard

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from "Jeff Surfus" <jeffsurfus@mediaone.net>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a reposting of a message I sent earlier this month. Note that the
EPA has changed the email address for emailing comments to the docket.
The change is reflected in the message below. Please take a few moments
to email your support for a 3 ppb arsenic standard. You can cut and paste
the talking points at the end of the message and email it to the docket.
It will take you less than a minute!

Thanks.

As previously posted on Enviro-Mich, The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has opened a comment period regarding a range of proposed
arsenic standards, including 3, 5, 10, and 20 parts per billion (ppb). It
is crucial that EPA hears comments from many citizens concerned about
public health.

Arsenic is known to cause fatal cancers and many other diseases including
heart problems and diabetes. Arsenic levels in Michigan groundwater are
very high in many parts of the state. In 1999 the National Academy of
Sciences concluded that the current arsenic standard of 50 ppb did not
protect people's health and called for it to be strengthened. After 25
years of research and debate, and under pressure from water companies and
polluting industries, EPA set the standard at 10ppb in January 2001. The
Bush Administration has delayed this standard for review.

Please take a few moments to send your comments to EPA in support of a 3
ppb standard, which is achievable and the most protective of public
health. Please send a copy of your comments to your U.S. Representative
and to both of your U.S. Senators to make sure they are aware of your
concern.

Here's the address:

W-99-16-VI Arsenic Comments Clerk
Water Docket (MC-4101)
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20460

You can also email your comments to: ow-arsenic-docket@epa.gov

Make sure to refer to the docket # (W-99-16-III) at the beginning of your
comments.

---------------------------------

Here are some specific talking points you can use in your comments:

-I welcome the opportunity to express my view that the EPA should adopt a
3 ppb standard for arsenic in drinking water.

-For every part above 3ppb that the standard is set, evidence indicates
that thousands of people may get sick from arsenic-related diseases.

-New technologies implemented with old and new funding programs will
enable us to achieve the 3ppb standard at reasonable costs.

-To ensure citizen awareness, requirements for arsenic reporting in
consumer confidence (right to know) reports from the January 2001 rule
should remain in the final rule.

-The people of this country have a right to clean, safe, and affordable
drinking water.
