DEQ Approves Air Permit for Minergy Detroit

The Department of Environmental Quality today approved an air-use permit
for Minergy Detroit L.C.C.

Minergy will operate a cyclone furnace that recycles municipal wastewater
solids and other materials into a glass aggregate product. The glass-like
materials will be used for floor tiles, abrasives, roofing shingle granules
and asphalt paving.

Detroit's Water and Sewerage Department currently incinerates Detroit's
wastewater solids.

The DEQ's Air Quality Division conducted an extensive review of the
application, which included a public hearing and comment period. After
careful consideration, Air Quality Division Chief Dennis Drake determined
that the Minergy permit meets the requirements to protect air quality.

"I am confident that changes made to the permit address issues raised by
members of the public," Drake said. "These include a requirement to
install additional controls for mercury and dioxins."

Information regarding the Minergy permit is available from the DEQ Air
Quality Division. Visit the division Internet Web site at
www.deq.state.mi.us/aqd and click on "Permits," or write to the DEQ Air
Quality Division Permit Section, P.O. Box 30260, Lansing, MI 48909.
