Hold 1,200-cow dairies to high standards

Giant dairy operations like the one nearing completion in Huntington County bear close watching for their environmental effects. New state regulations must be enforced and more controls imposed if the massive amounts of manure threaten water quality.

The 1,200-cow dairy planned near Andrews is scheduled to begin operations in early 2002. Three more herds are soon to follow, all of them requiring careful attention to manure storage and disposal.

Vreba-Hoff Dairy Development, a firm in Hudson, Mich., that is building all four Huntington County dairies, describes itself as an environmentally conscious business.
