E-M:/ Application for Directional Drilling Received by DNR

Application for Leases to Allow for Directional Drilling under the Great Lakes received by the DNR.

According the DNR officials, they have received two applications for oil and gas leases below Great Lakes bottomlands.  These sites would be accessed through directional drilling techniques from shore.

The State Senate recently postponed a vote until January 30, 2002 on a bill that would place a moratorium on leases of Great Lakes bottomlands.   The reason given was that the Great Lakes Task Force is conducting hearing around the state and the Senators wanted to wait for the report.  Unfortunately, it now appears that vote will be too late.

Bills have also been introduced in the House to institute a moratorium and they been referred to the House Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Committee, but no hearing has been scheduled.

Details about the applications will be posted when they are available.
