NEWS RELEASE
PAL and Michigan Land Use Funders host statewide land use networking conference.
Business, environmental, urban, and public policy advocates coming together with statewide foundations to discuss land use issues.

27 September 2001 - Lansing, MI - People and Land (PAL) and the Michigan Land Use Funders (MLUF), funding sources for organizations advocating land use education and decision making in Michigan, will co host "Growth Management, Urban Equity, and Land Protection," a statewide land use networking conference. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 3 at the Bengel Wildlife Center in Bath, Michigan.

The purpose of the conference is to promote discussion among non-profit leaders engaged in land use reform, farmland protection, urban revitalization and related issues. Most of these leaders are also recipients of PAL and MLUF grant funding coming together to share resources.

Panelists of the program include Jim Barrett, Michigan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director; Dr. David Skole, Michigan Land Resource Project Researcher; Bill Rustem, PAL Project Manager and senior vice president of Public Sector Consultants, and Pat Noonan, CEO of the Conservation Fund.

The event is scheduled to wrap up by 3:15 p.m. It will be followed by a legislative reception at the Lansing City Club from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. Conference detail, and complete speaker and land use funder lists available at the PAL website, http://www.peopleandland.org

The mission of PAL is to enable people to live in diverse, healthy communities that are environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially equitable. People and Land is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and administered by Public Sector Consultants (PSC), a Lansing-based public policy research firm. People and land believes that how we choose to use the natural resource of land in Michigan today will shape the nature and quality of life in Michigan for the 21st century and beyond. Diverse interests must come together to find common ground. It is only then the people of our state will have the information they need to make intelligent land use decisions.

The Michigan Land Use Funders is a loose coalition of funders engaged in grantmaking on land-use, farmland protection and urban revitalization. Participants to-date include: The Beldon Fund, Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, Council of Michigan Foundations, Americana Foundation, Carls Foundation, Frey Foundation, Hudson-Webber Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, People and Land, Kresge Foundation, McGregor Foundation, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality - Coastal Management Program, C.S. Mott Foundation, Rotary Charities of Traverse City, and the Wege Foundation.
