Announcement and Invitation to Attend
National Training Workshop On Local Urban Air Toxics Assessment and Reduction Strategies

DATE: November 13 - 15, 2001
Note: Special activities related to the workshop's goals may be scheduled
for November 16th. If interested in conducting a special activity on
November 16th, please indicate your interest on the registration form.

LOCATION: Detroit, Michigan, Crowne Plaza Hotel

SUMMARY:
In response to the recognized need to improve the capacity of state, local and tribal
governments and organizations to understand and reduce exposures to air toxics in urban air,
the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease
Registry of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will sponsor a

National Training Workshop On Local Urban Air Toxics Assessment and Reduction Strategies on
November 13 -15 in Detroit, Michigan. This workshop will bring together community
organizations, academic institutions, and local, state and federal governments working on local
air toxics to share experiences and learn from each other. The workshop will summarize the
best current knowledge and experience and identify future needs in the work to:
Build local capacity and establish partnerships to address air toxics issues
Identify and collect information on all local sources of air toxics
Measure and estimate air toxic concentrations from combined sources
Analyze information to identify hotspots and set priorities to address air toxics
Design programs and take action to reduce emissions and risks from air toxics

GOAL:
Improve the capacity of communities, academic institutions, and governments to understand
and reduce exposures to air toxics in urban air.
