State Approves Air Permit for Continental Aluminum

The Department of Environmental Quality today approved a consent order and
an air-use permit for Continental Aluminum Co., a recycling facility in
Oakland County's Lyon Township.

The consent order requires the payment of a civil penalty to resolve prior
air quality violations at the facility. The air-use permit provides
emissions limits and operational restrictions to ensure compliance with air
quality rules and regulations.

The DEQ's Air Quality Division completed an extensive evaluation of the
facility before making a decision on the consent order and revised
permit. As a result of comments and concerns expressed during the public
hearing and comment period, additional testing, monitoring, tighter
emission limits, and stringent control measures were added to the permit to
guarantee compliance beyond minimum state and federal requirements.

Air Quality Division Chief Dennis Drake determined that the Continental
permit meets the requirements to protect air quality.

"I am confident that the operation of the facility in accordance with the
consent order and revised permit requirements will not adversely affect
neighboring residents," Drake said. "These include the requirement to
comply with national air quality standards to protect health with an
adequate margin of safety as well as personal comfort and well-being."

Information regarding the consent order and permit is available from the
DEQ Air Quality Division by visiting its Internet Web site at
www.deq.state.mi.us/aqd and clicking on "Permits," or by writing to the Air
Quality Division Permit Section at P.O. Box 30260, Lansing, MI 48909.
