E-M:/ Corps' decision on wetlands

Enviro-Mich message from Terry & Barb Miller <terbar@concentric.net>

Dear EMers,
Good news to report -- the Corps of Engineers has declined to follow the
DEQ's action in allowing the destruction of emergent wetlands along the
Saginaw Bay. Although mowing will still be allowed, disking or plowing 30
feet of the most biologically productive area from still water to landward,
as well as access paths, will NOT be allowed. According to the story in the
Bay City Times (1/5/02), the Corps received 18 letters in favor of a
regional permit to allow such "grooming", all from property owners, and 36
from those opposed including the EPA, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
and most interestingly, the state Department of Natural Resources - one half
of Engler's cleaved DNR did the right thing, opposing what it's fraternal
opposite spawned. The entire story is at

want to thank Dave Dempsey, the Michigan Environmental Council, and all
those wonderful Michigan environmental groups and individuals who sent
letters opposing this travesty.
