DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON CADILLAC FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will
host an open house Tuesday,
Jan. 29, to provide information and receive public comment
on proposed forest management activities to be done in 2003
in the Cadillac Forest Management Unit. The open house will
be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and
Fishing Center, 6098 East M-115, Cadillac.
Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one-tenth of
the state forest. The information gathered includes the
health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types;
wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological
sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods.
Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the
sustainability of the resource in providing the variety of
values, uses and products that state lands offer to
Michigan's citizens.
This open house is an opportunity for interested people to
review proposed treatments and provide input toward final
decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public
an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about
issues of interest. Maps and information that will be
available at the open house can be accessed on the DNR Web
site at www.michigandnr.com. Click on Compartment Reviews
under Resource & Conservation Management.
Each forest management unit is divided into smaller units or
compartments to facilitate better administration of the
resources. Compartments in the following townships are under
review this year:
* Lake County: South Newkirk and Peacock townships.
* Osceola County: Rose Lake Township.
* Missaukee County: Butterfield, Norwich, Holland and
Pioneer townships.
* Wexford County: Hanover and Liberty townships.

A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for March 26, beginning at 9 a.m.
at the Carl T. Johnson Center in Cadillac. Persons with
disabilities needing accommodations for these meetings
should contact Dennis Vitton at 231-775-9727 ext. 6040.
