The Future of the Great Lakes

Sponsored by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research

February 13, 2002

* What are the truly threatening environmental factors affecting the
Great Lakes and how might we manage them to maintain the health of these
water resources?

* What are the economic and land use policy considerations when
designing sustainable shoreline development?

* Are today's environmental policies in Michigan consistent with the
long range management plan for the Great Lakes?

There is rising concern over the maintenance, conservation, and preservation
of the Great Lakes, the world's most vast fresh water source. Today's
debate over the many environmental issues such as contaminant levels, water
diversion, directional drilling, and dune and soil erosion, counter
challenge economic issues such as development rights, trade, and tourism.

This forum will outline the issues facing legislators today and the
environmental economics of the Great Lakes. Both costs and benefits of
maintaining and improving the health of the Great Lakes must be better
understood before legislative leaders can make wise decisions about related
policy and allocating scarce resources.
