She may be trying to be the Champion of the Great Lakes, but what about the
dry part of the state? The Granholm ten point plan misses the mark on land
use...totally.

Former Gov. Milliken has remarked that the one thing he wishes he could have
done in office is pass a comprehensive land use package. Truly. the Granholm
10-point plan is an important part of water conservation and maintenance in
our state, but I have to question the political motive. Michigan residents
are fired up over drilling and our Great Lake Heritage. Further, from an
ecosystem management approach, this plan should take into account the effect
of land use (you know sprawling development, more and bigger highways, and
loss of farmland and open space) that not only reduces our ground water
re-charge area but threatens tourism and food security.

Dear Friend,
Speaking at the annual banquet of the Izaak Walton League in Grand Rapids,
Attorney General Jennifer Granholm said Michigan needs strengthened zoning
to protect its world-class rivers and wetlands from sprawling development,
improved sewage management to keep beaches free of fecal bacteria, and laws
that promote more efficient use of water. According to Andy Guy, a
journalist with the Michigan Land Use Institute, Ms. Granholm's 10-point
plan, as well as her remarks on the need to develop a new attitude about
environmental protection, and new statutes to put it into effect, were the
most comprehensive yet by any of the Democratic or Republican candidates
for governor.
	See Andy's piece here:

With the report on Ms. Granholm's campaign visit to Grand Rapids, the
Institute introduces its coverage of the 2002 Michigan race for governor.
From now until November, the Institute will regularly offer on its Web
site accurate, fair, and penetrating coverage of candidates from both
parties.

Also, the Institute prepared and posted a timeline of events associated
with this year's strikingly one-sided votes in the state House and Senate
to ban Great Lakes drilling. The last date -- Governor Engler's signature
on the new law -- is still to be added.
	The timeline is here:

Thanks to all in Michigan's environmental community who have worked so
hard and changed the terms of the debate. Best, Keith Schneider, program
director
