State Approves Air Permit for GM Craft Centre

An air-use permit allowing General Motors Corp. to expand operations at
its Lansing Craft Centre was approved today by the Department of
Environmental Quality.

The decision comes after months of exhaustive technical review and
thorough consideration of all public comments.

"I appreciate the valuable input offered by the public and believe that
this permit is responsive to the issues that have been raised," said
Dennis Drake, chief of the DEQ Air Quality Division who approved the
permit.

The DEQ review of GM's application included a public hearing, public
meeting, opportunity for oral testimony and an extended comment period.
As a result of issues raised through the public participation process,
the agency performed a combined toxics analysis that included the GM
Lansing Care Assembly, GM Lansing Grand River, and GM Lansing Craft
Centre facilities. The analysis found that no adverse health effects
would result from the combined operation of the three plants.

In addition, the permit was revised to include additional testing and
tighter emissions limits to guarantee compliance with state and federal
air-quality requirements. For example, GM revised its requested total
volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from 375 tons per year to
270 tons per year. The company also is being required to test the
water wash system within the basecoat booth to demonstrate the amount of
VOC control achieved.

GM is modifying an existing automobile and light duty truck coating
process and assembly plant to accommodate the production of specialty
niche vehicles such as the Chevrolet Super Sport Roadster.

Information regarding the permit is available from the DEQ Air Quality
Division. Visit the DEQ Internet Web site at www.michigan.gov/deq and
click on "Air" and then "Air Permits" or write to the DEQ Air Quality
Division Permit Section, P.O. Box 30260, Lansing, MI 48909.
