IAGLR Unveils 24 Years of Great Lakes Research Online

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The International Association for Great Lakes Research
announces the online release of 24 years of Great Lakes research in an
effort to better inform public policy with sound science.

IAGLR has converted its hard copy archive of the Journal of Great Lakes
Research to electronic format (PDF) and made it easily accessible via a
searchable database on its web site. Development of the online archive was
supported by the Joyce Foundation, which awarded a grant to IAGLR for the
project titled Great Lakes Science & Policy: Strengthening the Connection.
This project aims to improve communication between Great Lakes scientists
and policymakers.

The archive is the only resource of its kind: a multidisciplinary,
peer-reviewed collection of papers from various scientific, management, and
policy perspectives on the Great Lakes.

"Online access to this resource will not only promote communication among
researchers, but will provide Great Lakes policy makers, managers,
nongovernmental organizations, the media, students, and concerned citizens
with easy access to the largest repository of Great Lakes research in the
world," notes Dr. Joseph DePinto, IAGLR's Publication Committee Chairman.

"We hope that timely access to this scientific information will strengthen
the science-policy linkage in the Great Lakes Basin and promote better
management of one-fifth of the world's standing freshwater."

Since 1967, IAGLR has served as the focal point for compiling and
disseminating multidisciplinary knowledge on North America's Laurentian
Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world. IAGLR communicates this
knowledge through publication of the Journal of Great Lakes Research
(established in 1975) and sponsorship of an annual conference on Great Lakes
research (begun in 1953).

The association's membership has grown from 225 scientists in 1968 to nearly
700 scientists, policy makers, engineers, resource managers, and graduate
students from the United States, Canada, and 20 other countries in 2002. In
addition, IAGLR's membership includes more than 250 libraries throughout the
world. IAGLR is a nonprofit organization supported primarily by membership
dues, private donations and income generated from its annual conferences.
