Re: E-M:/ Sierra Club presents "Preserving Michigan" by Dave Dempsey

This is the answer I sent to a couple of others, including Steve Bean:
As as been explained  to leadership in the Green Party by MI LCV
exec. director Dana Debel, this is a forum set up particularily for those
candidates who are facing a primary election.  As you know, the August 6th
primary election for both the Republican  and Democratic parties is quite
contentious.  Had this been a forum post-primary, then all candidates in the
gubernatorial general election, no matter what party, would have been invited to attend.

I hope this answers your questions.
Thanks for the inquiry.

I might have missed some discussions of this on the list as I’ve been away for awhile, but I am sorely disappointed that the LCV would not invite other announced candidates from other minor parties to this event. Failure to include legitimate candidates in all public forums smacks of the kind of anti-democratic policy that has lead to current political quagmire. Ignoring other parties and candidates narrows the marketplace of ideas. I urge LCV and others to open the process back up again – we’ve been fighting the two-party hegemony for too long. Remember that many of the progressive ideas that are part of American life were given birth in minor parties incluiding social security, 40 hour work week…etc.

While I hold Dave Dempsey in the highest regard, it is unfortunate that he is competing with the League of Conservation Voters Gubernatorial debate.  Perhaps you could all adjourn to Brighton at Brighton High School, 7:30 pm for this unprecedented opportunity to see 3 democratic and 2 republican candidates. I bet Dave is gracious enough to offer your group a rain check.  We enviros just have too many opportunities to have fun these days. (smile!!)

Michigan was once legendary for environmental protection. In recent years
we've reversed course.  At this month's Sierra Club/Huron Valley Group
public meeting in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, May 21, Dave Dempsey, author of
the new book "Ruin & Recovery:  Michigan's Role as a Conservation Leader,"
will describe how the Sierra Club helped make Michigan a paragon of
environmental stewardship, and how we could lead the way again.

Dave's presentation is titled "Preserving Michigan: How the Sierra Club
Helped Save Our Natural Wonders."  It will be followed by our social hour,
which features light refreshments and gives you a chance to meet others
who share your interests in exploring, enjoying, and protecting nature.
You can also learn about local Sierra Club activities including hikes,
service projects, and a variety of conservation campaigns.  If you want to
help stop sprawl (at no cost to you!) while buying groceries, books, CDs,
and other merchandise at the stores where you already shop, we'll have
EarthCash shopping vouchers available for sale by cash or check.

The Sierra Club/Huron Valley Group's monthly public meetings are held on
the third Tuesday of each month at the beautiful Matthei Botanical
Gardens, located in east Ann Arbor at 1800 N. Dixboro Road (between Geddes
and Plymouth Roads, east of US-23), beginning at 7:30 pm.  Meetings are
free and open to the public. Newcomers are welcome; no membership is

I hope to see you at Tuesday's meeting.  Please feel free to forward this
message to others who might be interested.
