LocalMotion Names Brian M. McKenna, Ph.D. New Executive Director

LocalMotion, a not-for-profit organization founded to raise awareness about the links between toxic chemicals and negative health consequences, has announced the appointment of a new Executive Director, Brian M. McKenna, Ph.D.

McKenna, a resident of East Lansing, Mich., is an educator specializing in anthropology, human health and the environment.  He is widely recognized throughout Michigan for his work in addressing environmental issues.

McKenna received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Michigan State University.  His published work has addressed public health policy issues, questions related to environmental anthropology, and other public policy and environmental concerns.

Currently, McKenna teaches courses at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan-Flint. He is a Consulting Editor to the Journal of Medical Humanities and serves as a consultant to the Michigan Environmental Council in Lansing.  He also writes a newspaper column, ³Health and Environment,² published in The City Pulse of Lansing.

Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., LocalMotion was founded by Elizabeth Dance in 1999.  Ms. Dance served as the organization¹s first executive director.

LocalMotion is recognized for its groundbreaking lecture series  ³Toxins in the Environment: Prevention & Solutions² and ³Toxic Chemicals in the Great Lakes Basin Š The Michigan Story.²  These series provided timely scientific information, presented by internationally recognized scientists and environmentalists.

LocalMotion also is recognized for its work to reduce pesticide use in the Grosse Pointes of Michigan.  As part of these efforts, LocalMotion¹s ³Safe Schools Initiative² detailed practical alternatives to pesticides and other common chemicals.
