E-M:/ SW Detroit Citizens Reject Freight Terminal (Again!)

Enviro-Mich message from "Savoie, Kathryn" <KSavoie@accesscommunity.org>

Residents who would be affected by the proposed Detroit Intermodal Freight
Terminal (DIFT) project once again have roundly rejected the State's plans
to expand freight activity in this thriving community. More than 200
residents attended a Detroit City Council Community meeting Tuesday night in
Southwest Detroit and voiced concerns about MDOT's proposed plan, which
would increase intermodal truck traffic in the area from 2,000 to 16,000 per
day. The project would result in the loss of homes and businesses in the
only area of Detroit that gained population from the 1990 to 2000 Census; it
would also increase air pollution and truck traffic in an area already
heavily burdened with both.

The City of Detroit Planning Commission is expected to make a recommendation
about the DIFT project at its meeting today. I'm optimistic that the
Commission will do the right thing and reject this unreasonable and
unnecessary project. . .
