EPA APPROVES DOW HAZARDOUS WASTE TREATMENT VARIANCE

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has approved Dow
Chemical's request for a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
hazardous waste treatment variance at its Midland, Mich., facility.

Approval of the variance will expedite cleanup of some 175,000 cubic
yards of dioxin-contaminated sludge in a holding pond on Dow's property.
The sludge will be removed from treatment ponds at the plant as a result
of EPA and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality orders.

The variance approval gives Dow consent to dispose of partially dried
contaminated sludge in its Salzburg Landfill instead of burning it. "We
are confident that disposal of sludge at the landfill will be protective
of human health and the environment," said Thomas Skinner, EPA Regional
Administrator.
