E-M:/ yucca mountain nuke dump
FROM HEADWATERS NEWS:
Editor's notes:
In the
Rockies
today, both of Utah's senators
agreed to vote
for a nuclear waste dump at Nevada's Yucca Mountain, in either a fine
display of political leverage or NIMBYism on a national scale.
Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett said they'd support the proposal backed by
the Bush administration and adamantly opposed by Nevadans, but in
exchange for a promise from Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham to fight a
plan to store hot nuclear wastes on the Skull Valley Goshute
Reservation.
The deal gave Bush and Republicans a majority of votes in the
Senate.
Bennett said it was better to have nuclear waste traveling through Utah
on its way to Nevada than to have it stored about 100 miles upwind from
Salt Lake.
