E-M:/ South Fox Island construction

Enviro-Mich message from "Upton, Brian" <BUPTON@mail.gtbindians.com>

Today's Traverse City Record-Eagle reported on the U.S. Army Corps' response
to construction on South Fox Island. It appears that the article was wrong
in reporting that Johnson/Mirada Ranch had begun construction on two piers
in front of Johnson's house on South Fox. Charlie Simon, of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers, indicated this afternoon that, as far as he knew, no
construction on piers has been undertaken on South Fox - only construction
on the seawall has taken place. Charlie confirmed that Mirada Ranch's
permit application for pier construction had been withdrawn and he was
unaware of whether Mirada would resubmit it later.

The Army Corps' comments on the construction are a vindication of DEQ
staffers' recommendations, which reportedly had been to not approve permits
allowing the construction of the house on the beach. Unfortunately, DNR and
DEQ staffers don't seem to carry much weight with current agency leadership.
