E-M:/ Scoping Meeting on Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal

Enviro-Mich message from "Savoie, Kathryn" <KSavoie@accesscommunity.org>

The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced a scoping meeting on
the proposed Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal (DIFT) Project. The meeting
will be held on September 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Latino
Family Services Center, 3815 W. Fort Street in Detroit (just west of the
intersection of Fort Street and W. Grand Blvd.)

The proposed DIFT plans call for expanding the current rail yard to 840
acres, with a freight terminal served by six entrances/gates. Daily
intermodal train traffic is expected to grow from fewer than a dozen per day
to 50-plus, and truck traffic increased from 2,000 intermodal trips per day
to 16,000 trips per day by 2025.

Potential impacts of this project include loss of homes and businesses
within the City of Detroit (in the only neighborhood with population growth
from 1990 to 2000 Census), increased air pollution, noise, street closures
and more.

While many of the impacts of this project will be borne by the host
community, the project also has the potential to impact the future
development of proposed high-speed and commuter train service through the
terminal area, due to conflicts in scheduling and incompatibility of signal
