Subject: SPECIAL ALERT: Great Lakes Legacy Act to be considered by the
U.S. House of Representatives

ALERT!

It has just been announced that the Great Lakes Legacy Act, H.R. 1070,
introduced by Congressman Vernon Ehlers, will be considered by the full
House of Representatives next Wednesday, Sept. 4. The bill will be
considered under a procedure usually reserved for non-controversial
legislation, so prospects for passage appear positive.

However, it would still be useful for members of local RAP groups to
contact their Congressional representatives to advise them the bill will
be considered and to urge their support. A quick phone call to your
representative's district office will suffice.

Companion legislation in the U.S. Senate, S. 2544 is still being
considered in committee. Passing the legislation in the House will
enhance prospects for securing Senate approval and, ultimately, the
President's signature on this important bill.

The Great Lake Legacy Act authorizes $50 million a year for five years
for sediment remediation work in Great Lakes Areas of Concern and $2
million a year for five years for research and development of innovative
sediment remediation technologies. A key difference between the House
and Senate bills is that the House bill requires a 35 percent
non-federal match, while the Senate bill, as currently drafted, does
not.

Special thanks go to Congressman Ehlers and his staff for introducing
this legislation and promoting its passage.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me at the Great Lakes
Commission at 734-665-9135.
