Once again, Michigan's news media are doing an abominable job of covering
what is really happening to Michigan's environment, as opposed to what press
releases from PR professionals say is happening.

* House Bill 6418, the bill to privatize tens of thousands of acres of
valuable Great Lakes coastal wetlands, is rumored to be set for a committee
hearing within seven to 10 days after the election.

* The outgoing, discredited DEQ regime of Russell Harding has today named
three new division chiefs, including an out-of-stater, the U.S. EPA's G.
Vinson Hellwig, to head the air program, effective December 1. Other loyal
Harding soldiers are George Bruchmann, head of waste and hazardous
materials, and Amy Butler, environmental science and services. Perhaps it
did not occur to the lame ducks that they should permit their successors to
choose a management team.

* Anecdotal reports suggest the less worthy members of the development
community are hurrying to break ground (and destroy wetlands) around the
state while enforcement is lax, preparing for the possibility that the next
DEQ administration will take seriously its reponsibility to protect the
