E-M:/ Dioxin clean up information urgently needed.

Enviro-Mich message from "Paul Hanly" <PNARH@bigpond.com>

Dioxin clean up information urgently needed.

Rhodes, Sydney, Australia near the 2000 Olympics site is to have dioxin
contaminated soil remediated for high density residential use for about 2000
apartments housing about 4500 people.

The residents are concerned that the proposed residual dioxin level is 1.4
ppb. They are seeking assistance in obtaining copies of official American
Federal or State approvals for cleanups of dioxin contaminated land which
show a residual dioxin requirement of 1 ppb or less or which require
relocation of residents from contaminated sites with a dioxin content of
less than 1.4 ppb. They are also asking for copies of recent reasoned
submissions on why residual dioxin levels should be less than 1 ppb for
residential or open space use. They need to have their submission in by 9
December - just 3 weeks away.

Another nearby site previously owned by Union Carbide is also to be
remediated for residential use. A strip of dioxin contaminated sediments in
Homebush Bay is also to be remediated. The Environmental Impact Studies for
those remediations are not yet public.

The Rhodes people are willing to send a CD with the Environmental Impact
Study for the remediation to anyone who provides substantial assistance - it
costs them about USD 20 each to burn pack and post, so please don't ask

A lot of information is available at www.rhodesnsw.org so please start

Please forward material to Paul Hanly pnarh@bigpond.com

If you want to phone please ring Sydney Australia 9736 2419.
