E-M:/ Blue Gold

Enviro-Mich message from "John Riley" <jrriley@hotmail.com>

For anyone interested in Water Quantity issues, I would like to highly
recommend a very recent book, called “Blue Gold, The Fight to Stop the
Corporate Theft of the World’s Water,” by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke.

Published in 2002, this book details the global trend of transnational
corporations privatizing water rights, diverting water from resource rich
areas to drier places, taking over control of municipal water systems and
selling water to the highest bidder, leaving the poorest people the least
able to afford this most basic human need. Because of several international
trade agreements, water is becoming more of a commodity instead of the
common property resource that it ought to be.

The book talks about the economics, the politics and the natural resource
implications of this process. It also gives ideas and recommendations on how
to stop companies like Perrier, Evian, Naya, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and others
from cozying up to our decision-makers, who continue to allow corporate
greed to overshadow basic human rights and environmental protection.

This is an important book for environmental professionals, because of its
implications for all common property natural resources. It is especially
relevant in Michigan, where the process has already begun...
