E-M:/ Foiling the Floods: Managing Stormwater Through Landscape Ecology

Friends,

Have you noticed that so-called "100-year floods" seem to come around a
lot more often than once a century? It's not an illusion. Suburban
sprawl has replaced natural landscapes that used to soak up stormwater
with lawns, pavement, and rooftops. At the same time, global climate
change is increasing the frequency of intense downpours.

But there are solutions other than sandbags and ever-larger sewer systems.
At the March Sierra Club Monthly Meeting, Joan Nassauer of the University
of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and the Environment will present
"Foiling the Floods: Managing Stormwater Through Landscape Ecology."
Professor Nassauer has shown that working with nature instead of against
it can reduce the cost and devastation of flooding. She'll share her
research and practical experience in using plants, landscaping, and other
techniques to manage stormwater naturally.

The meeting begins on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30 pm at the Matthaei
Botanical Gardens and is followed by our social hour, during which you can
meet others who share your interests in enjoying and protecting nature.
Want to help stop sprawl (at no cost to you) while buying groceries,
books, CDs, and other stuff at the stores where you already shop? We'll
have EarthCash shopping vouchers available for purchase by cash or check.

Sierra Club/Huron Valley Group General Meetings are held on the third
Tuesday of each month at the beautiful Matthaei Botanical Gardens, located
at 1800 N. Dixboro Road (between Geddes and Plymouth Roads, east of US-23),
beginning at 7:30 pm. Meetings are free and open to the public. Newcomers
are welcome; no membership is required.

I hope you can join us at Tuesday's meeting. Please feel free to forward
this message to others who might be interested.

Doug Cowherd
Co-chair, Sierra Club-Huron Valley Group
